A few hundred paces deeper into the forest, our Paladin began to sense a vibration run through her body, growing stronger with each step. Under the dim light of the waning crescent moon, she scanned the forest floor. β€œIt’s here,” she thought to herself as she searched for more patches of the curious gem-like moss, β€œit has to be.”

As she traveled further into the woods, she recalled the time she snuck into the parsonage of the High Priestess. Laid open across a small gilded chest, she found an ancient scroll filled with strange, incomprehensible text unlike any she had seen in the dusty codices she had studied at the phrontistery. In the vividly inked incipit, she saw for the first time the image of the bright red and white toadstool, the Fly Agaric, encircled by winged creatures joining hands. According to the lore of her people, the old ones called it the Lightbringer, but little else was known about the mythic mushroom. None had been seen for ages, and were considered to be long lost with the last of the Fae.

The memory of our Paladin’s youth, however, was abruptly shattered by a loud crashing sound that jolted the birds from their sleepy perches overhead with a cacophony of shrieks and madly flapping wings. In one swift move, our Paladin leapt into a crouch behind a large decaying tree stump and drew her dagger from her boot. Eyes wide and ears perked, she watched her surroundings and waited for the unseen threat to reveal itself. These woods held dangers after dark; local legends spoke of vicious beasts, ruthless bandits, and malicious entities banished to the caves deep within the forest. She held her breath for what seemed like an eternity, but nothing appeared.  β€œMust have been a widowmaker…” she reassured herself.

As she went to sheathe her weapon, a powerful pulse coursed through her body, causing her to lose her grip on her dagger. Quickly regaining control, she reached to retrieve the blade and just then, as if fate had intervened, her eyes landed squarely upon it: a tiny red cap with white spots protruding from another patch of emerald moss beside her boot, sparkling in the darkness.  A wave of disbelief washed over her: could it really be a Lightbringer?

If she wanted any answers, our Paladin knew she was going to have to uproot the toadstool from its moss bed and keep it with her, hidden, until she could pay a visit to the only one in The Realm who could hopefully provide her with any insight. With the lightest touch, she plucked it up by its stem, careful not to damage its delicate structure. Examining it closely in cupped hands, the vibrations were stronger than ever. Fetching a small leather pouch from her belt, she stashed her prize away within, securing it with the tie of a bow. As she made her way back to camp, she knew that night her dreams would be filled with magic and fairy wings, and in the morning she would set out for the ivy-laced cottage of The Mage…
